Wrath, head of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and the
Vampire King, was known among his Brothers as being utterly cold.
He was not evil, he just did not allow himself to feel anything
but a need for vengeance; not hatred and certainly not friendship.
So when Darius asked Wrath to help his half human daughter
through transition, he refused. But
then Darius was killed the same evening of his request and Wrath feels
obligated to honor his last request.
Beth Randall, Darius’s daughter, grew up as an
orphan totally unknowing of her father and the fact that she is not
wholly human. She has
always felt slightly out of touch with everyone but blames that on being
in and out of the foster care system.
When Wrath suddenly appears in her apartment she finds someone
that she can and does connect with. But where did he come from and why is he after her?
DARK LOVER is J.R. Ward’s debut novel and what a
way to start! This book
grabs the reader by the throat and never lets go.
It is a place where the good guys, the Black Dagger Brotherhood,
are dark and dangerous and the villains, the lessers, are ones that most
people would not give a second glance at.
A rather dark place fraught with danger; a place where there is
an ongoing battle for the survival of an entire species that most are
unaware actually exists.
A really nice feature was the glossary of terms
that are unique to the Vampire culture that was placed right at the
beginning of this book. This
reviewer did find herself referring back to it more than once. It
would be appreciated if more authors would see fit to assist their
readers in this fashion.
Wrath and Beth are definitely the stars of DARK
LOVER. Wrath is a tormented
soul who blames himself for the death of his family.
He refuses to allow anyone close to himself as he does not feel
that he deserves anyone. Beth,
once she finds out and accepts the truth about herself is more than a
match for Wrath. Through
her love she enables him to accept his worth.
All of the members of the Brotherhood: Tohrment,
Vishous, Rhage, Phury and Zsadist along with an ex cop Butch O’Neal,
are intriguing and tortured characters that utterly fascinated this
reviewer. They add quite a
bit of depth to the story and give further insights into a rather
complex and unique culture that exists in the shadows.
This reviewer is looking forward to reading more of their stories
in the next installment, LOVER ETERNAL, which will be out in March 2006.
