Due to her past experiences, beautiful dietitian, Andrea Martin, has a special bond with the cardiac patients she works with at Bayview Heights Hospital. She is full of life and loves to encourage and support her patients emotionally, as well as with their diets. Dr. Braeden Landry is an intense, brilliant heart surgeon who has come home to help train other surgeons in a non-invasive heart bypass procedure that assists patients in recovering much quicker than the old procedure. Unfortunately, a past relationship has left him unable to fully trust any woman, but he still has the reputation of a love them and leave them flirt. A rare health condition has kept Andrea from committing herself to any romantic relationship since her former fiancé abandoned her. Because both of them have a fear of commitment, although for very different reasons, the cat and mouse games they play as they develop a relationship kept this reviewer engrossed in the story to see how each twist and turn would unfold.

The ancillary characters provide more depth to the plot and add to the sense of history behind each character’s actions. There is Sylvia, chief dietician and former lover of Braeden, Nancy, a nurse and Andrea’s best friend, Mr. Jenkins, Braeden’s and Andrea’s patient, and Mr. Jeffrey, the hospital administrator and Braeden’s mentor. In an amusing plot twist, Andrea is found to be an avid reader of romance novels. Along the way, each character makes some much needed discoveries about what they really need and want out of life. The ending, while somewhat predictable, still manages to pack an emotional wallop while giving the satisfaction of a true happily ever after. Ms. McPhee shows a strong command of language, and her descriptions of the physical surroundings are so real that the reader is easily able to visualize them.

For those readers looking for a novel that has lots of spicy romantic scenes, this is not the read for them. The sex scenes are more tender and romantic, rather than titillating and exciting. Their very sweetness adds to the overall tone of the book, and if written otherwise, would detract immensely. Reading about Andrea and Braeden’s struggle to discover each other’s true nature on the path to everlasting love was both realistic and moving. This reviewer found Be Still, My Heart! to be an enjoyable read, perfect for curling up with like a favorite treat. Andrea and Braeden’s story is an unforgettable one, and even though Braeden is very much an alpha male, he is able to show true tenderness and caring for his one true love. This reviewer looks forward to reading further books by Ms. McPhee as this one was certainly grand.
