Jean Adams has written an intriguing tale of a modern day knight, who finds he’s met an unusual damsel in distress. The hero and heroine are very likeable, interesting characters, with their inner feelings slowly revealed as the story unfolds. The modern day story set in Cornwall, full of intrigue, unexpected twists and an adventure that I really enjoyed reading, captivated me.
The unusual setting, combined with the authors in-depth knowledge of the area gives the reader a sense of being there, waiting for the beast to jump out of the pages. The characters are well drawn and good dialogue keeps the tale moving along. Mystery, secrets and intrigue are carefully woven throughout the book, to hold your attention to the satisfying end. Emma Hayward has led a sheltered life within a tight knit family, in America. She’s always had brothers watching over her… But she has a dream of becoming a wild life photographer. Now she has to prove she can make it, to herself as well as her family. Her first great adventure is to track down the mythical beast of Bodmin Moor. She is determined that nothing and no one is getting between her and her dream. She believes Seth is lying to her about the beast, so puts her ambition towards make the front page of a prestigious wild life magazine before her love for him.
Seth Trevelyan, unknown to her, is also on a crusade to save the beast, and will do almost anything to help her. He lives alone, a man who no longer trusts, especially a good-looking woman. Betrayed by a wife, abandoned in childhood by his mother, brought up by a father who believes him to be a bastard he has lost faith in his own feelings.
He finds Emma stranded near her broken down car, scared of becoming lost in the mist. Like any gallant knight of old he takes Emma to the safety of his home. Neither of them feels they have space in their lives for love. Slowly their secrets unravel, and they find their dreams aren't so different after all. Drawn together, their growing attraction ends in their making love. The unexpected intimacy adds to their feelings of insecurity, but they begin to realise together both can realise their dreams.
The setting and the characters are vividly drawn, with an intriguing hero and a single-minded heroine. Not a typical romance, but alive with the mystery of the mystic and daunting moors, which seem sometimes to have a life of their own
