Sophie came to
London to find a husband, but her father had lost his fortune. Her
mother tried to get her married off before anyone found out, but gossip
traveled faster and Sophie soon had to leave London shamed. Now, two
years later, Sophie gets a second chance to have a season. But she’s
attacked a couple of times by a mad man who insists she has something he
wants and knows someone she doesn’t. Mr. Kittridge comes to her rescue
when she’s almost strangled and later helps her to find her brother, who
apparently sent some stolen goods to England while he was fighting
Napoleon in France. Now it looks like his actions may cause another
scandal and she will have to leave London. Added to all this, there’s a
wager on her to marry this season, and Mr. Kittridge doesn’t seem to
mind all the shameful things about her. He has a few secrets of his
own.
Jennifer Mueller
has written a delightful romance set in the 1800’s. She brings her
reader back in time and her prose lets the reader feel she is right
there with the characters. And what a bevy of characters there are.
All adding their own charm or nastiness to the story and giving the
story depth and interest. Ms. Mueller has packed a lot into this story
and the reader doesn’t get lost. It all flows really well. This
reviewer enjoyed the banter between Sophie and Mr. Kitteridge. In fact,
Sophie is a wonderful character, who, after all the hardships she’s been
through deserves her own happy-ever-after. Mr. Kitteridge is a knight
in shinning armour who comes to her rescue. Who couldn’t be attracted
to a man like that? Lovers of the more traditional historical romance
will surely love this story. This reviewer couldn’t stop reading until
the last word and sighed with satisfaction at its end. A great read!
