London based Teresa Knight travels to Bangkok and learns that her friend
Anna Lee’s death was considered a straightforward drug buy gone bad. It
is uncharacteristic but even worse when brother Jeff Lee receives
unsavory sexual photos of his sister. This type of taunting prompts him
to hire Teresa who also happens to be a private ‘problem solver’.
Clues lead to New York and a BDSM cult of dominant black men and
submissive women. Isaac, the leader of The Sarcophacan Temple of Nubian
Princes espouses the taking back of power by black men through the
domination of women of all races though emphasizing the derogatory
belief that white or Asian males are inferior. To infiltrate this group
Teresa will have to learn about their habits, be trained to react
appropriately and then go deep undercover. All of this she does and
risks losing herself to desires she never knew she had.
A
side mystery in Nigeria from the man who takes it upon himself to train
Teresa has threads of similarity to the recent crimes. The tangle of
clues is difficult from which to make sense. Will the mystery be solved
before it is too late?
This
is a very cleverly plotted thriller of an erotic book. The premise is
outrageous but under Ms Lawrence’s pen, readers will find themselves
easily pulled deep into the story and happily suspending all sense of
disbelief. Pertinent facts and red herrings are sprinkled along the
story and make the conclusion plausible and believable.
There is a wonderful feel for each place from London, Bangkok, New York,
and Nigeria. The global setting of the story and the vivid descriptions
of each place makes it a bit of an armchair traveller type of a perk.
Interesting views and insight with none of the discomforts.
Discussions or comments of racism as differently seen by British and
American eyes were particularly astute and intelligent.
The
psychological and physical experience that Teresa goes through in
submerging herself in the BDSM aspects is edgy without being overly
hardcore. Sex scenes have little romance involved generally except in a
tender relationship with one of the more innocent members of the cult.
The
title doesn’t truly indicate the higher caliber of book under the
erotica genre that one finds upon reading BEG ME. Anyone who
enjoys this style of story should not hesitate to grab a copy and settle
in for a great read.
Readers should be warned that included are scenes of f/f.
