When Detective Liz
Ramsey scans the crowd gathered about the crime scene of a young woman who
was murdered, she is notices the tall, thin man at the back. Catching his
eyes, she is struck by the impact of his gaze.
In the course of
her investigation Liz runs into the bystander later. His name is Greg
Conyers and he just happens to be the town’s local celebrity and a man
that she is strangely drawn toward, even when the evidence starts to point
his way.
From the very first
paragraph to the ‘The End”, Karen McCullough’s voice in SHADOW OF A
DOUBT will have the reader glued to the pages. There is a general
feeling of eeriness and tension that is so needed in a great romantic
suspense. This reviewer was rather happy a couple times that she was
reading it in broad daylight.
Unfortunately the
characters, especially Liz Ramsey, bring the story down. This reviewer
finds it very difficult to believe that a police detective would totally
ignore evidence toward a suspect because she is head over heels in love.
For that matter, most police that have reached the rank of detective tend
to be skeptics and to fall that deeply in love that quickly is slightly
unrealistic. And if that woman...errr detective had gotten out of her car
yet again without either her radio or phone...
Even though
SHADOW OF A DOUBT did not earn a place on this reviewer’s keeper
shelf, this reviewer will be on the lookout for more of Ms. McCullough’s
work as the potential to be a phenomenal author is definitely there.
