Lenny Moss is a
janitor in a big city hospital. He takes care that union workers get all
their rights. As he is everywhere, and people seem to confide in him, he
often gets involved in solving mysteries. During a heat wave a young
woman dies in the hospital due to a botched up abortion. The workers and
medical students at the hospital are enraged and blame Dr. Odom for his
brutal methods, which seem to be aimed at black women. Lenny is asked to
investigate. He teams up with Kate Palmer, a medical student, who feels
equally outraged. Together they uncover secrets that the hospital would
rather keep undercover. Then another death throws them off track, chief
of security, Joe West is trying to eliminate Lenny and the workers in the
kitchen and laundry room are running to the emergency room because of the
heat. This is the third Lenny Moss mystery and hopefully not the last.
Timothy Sheard
knows how to write a tight, multi-layered crime novel that will completely
engross the reader. There are a lot of things going on and poor Lenny is
almost run ragged trying to keep up with them all. Mr. Sheard , himself a
veteran critical care nurse, gives his readers a glimpse into the workings
of a big hospital and all its many problems. He subtly addresses racial
problems in this taut thriller. He breathes life into his characters and
gives them a lot of tense moments. From the main story with Dr. Odom, to
the workers sweltering in the laundry room, to the nurse who gets fired
and has a rather obsessive admirer, to Lenny’s own problems with Patience,
Mr. Sheard keeps his readers on their toes. This reviewer was kept glued
to the pages devouring this great mystery. She bets the reader will not
guess who dunnit until almost the very end. This reviewer didn’t!
