Marissa Devlin
takes her orphaned half-brother, Riley across Australia, to hopefully
begin a new life for them both. Searching for work in the Out-back
brings her to cattle baron, Holt McMaster’s notice. His young daughter
Georgy needs a governess and Holt gives Marissa a chance but warning her
his daughter is a handful. He’s surprised to find Georgy actually likes
her and Riley is an added bonus along with cattle dog, Dusty.
The only problem
is Holt’s ex, Tara, and her equally evil sister Lois, who do everything
in their power to take back control over Holt’s life.
What neither
Marissa nor Holt realize is that they have both been hurt in the past
and need to move on. They battle against the attraction, although the
children bond until they are inseparable. If they both learn to trust
again, it’s possible their lives would be enriched by love.
The setting is
vividly brought to life as Marissa and Riley accompanied by Dusty, drive
into the wild blue yonder. The main characters were interesting and very
human, as their story unfolded. The evil sisters as in Cinderella were
suitably disposed of, giving this reviewer a sense of justice at last.
The stories tone reflected the atmosphere well, and dialogue was well
done and suited the content. The main characters had passion and zeal,
which gave the book a good energy and motivation was always clear in the
conflicts. The past impacted on the present in many ways, but the reader
was given a clear insight into the reasons for the characters actions.
The idea was fresh and nothing like the historical nanny stories of
years gone past. The actions kept the story flowing well to a very good
resolution with a perfect ending.
