The small town of
Flushing, Michigan hasn’t seen many changes since its founding. Renata
lives in one of the old original Victorian houses; only walking amongst
her neighbors when the sun goes down to quell her loneliness. Not many
comment about her not being seen in daylight, believing her tale of a sun
allergy. Renata remembers the burnings of anyone paranormal and knows that
even now, there are dedicated hunters still out there. She has become
hungry for new blood and visits the carnival that comes to town. After a
torrid sexual, encounter with two young men from a local college she feeds
from them during sex. Searching for a drifter she encounters Tony, but
feels there’s something strange about him. She’s unsure of him when she
can’t read his mind, but the attraction is strong pulling them together.
Enmeshed in each others emotions, the hunter in each is strong and neither
is willing to give in totally.
The story is strong
and this reviewer would have preferred it a little longer. The brief
encounter meant the reader didn’t get deep into the emotions of the
characters. The action was easy to follow and with a few more pages would
have made it more powerful. The conflict wasn’t really explored in depth,
making it more of a conscience decision between good and bad. There was
very little dialogue as it was mostly told from within the vampire’s
thoughts and feelings. The style could have used more passion and better
pacing, but overall an interesting tale. The lead in was over long for a
short story, but did give the reader an overall insight into the vampires
way of life. The ending was satisfying but leaves the reader wanting more
clarification.
