Set in San
Francisco in the flower power world of the 60’s, we find Kenneth Hailey
who looks at things logically and believes his is in control. His
girlfriend has left him for his best friend, so he takes a trip to San
Francisco to work and experience life. Then he meets Rose Red. She turns
his world upside down and leads him to a world of love-ins, peace rallies
and rock concerts. Free love is her motto and ‘love the one you’re with’
her creed. She is determined to open up his buttoned up shirts, muss up
his crew cut and get rid of his thick-rimmed glasses. He is determined to
logically sort out his rampant libido, get Rose on the right track and get
her to sort out her life. Two worlds collide and the only way these two
will find love is if both look at the world in a new light and learn
acceptance.
Vicki Gaia gives
her readers a colorful world and brings to life the hippies of the 60’s
with their beads, bells and free love. Not to mention the turbulence of
this era with a war that was radically protested against and thousands of
young people idealistically following their feelings for love and peace.
Ms. Gaia also gives her readers two characters so different from each
other the reader will wonder if they will ever be able to find the love
that seems to keep slipping out of their grasp. Both Rose and Kenneth
come alive in this story and their escapades will keep the reader turning
the pages. This reader was catapulted back to her childhood while reading
this book and Rose and Kenneth’s story was a delight to read. Both go
down a path of changes and learning. This reviewer got the goose bumps
and warm glows while reading the very satisfactory ending of this
wonderful story.
