Jack Lorentz is a
seller of collectible toys. A former solder and investigative reporter,
he was content with his business until Amanda walked into his office.
Amanda broke his heart fifteen years ago when she left him for Michael
Howard. Michael is the son of a wealthy Northwest family and he has
trouble. Human remains have been discovered on vacation property, and the
family is threatened with a scandal that could damage his plans. Jack has
been asked to investigate and find out who is responsible. Jack refuses,
but when Michael pulls out the big guns he capitulates. Suspects abound
in Michael’s dysfunctional family, and Amanda returning into his life
affects him profoundly. He needs objectivity to perform an investigation,
but he fears this could be the toughest struggle of his life and perhaps
the last.
Told from the
viewpoint of Jack Lorentz, Mr. Napier tells a story that for a debut
novel, is as complex as it is simple. Jack is a very complex character
that the reader will certainly come to care for. His outlook on life is
simple enough, until his past returns and old wounds resurface. He takes
us through this tale, with all its many twists and turns, introduces us to
its many strange and wacky characters and leads us on a merry trail of
murder and mayhem. This reviewer couldn’t put this book down. It had her
riveted while reading. When a mystery has you guessing throughout the
whole story until the very end, this is, in this reviewer’s opinion, a
very good book. This reviewer hopes that Mr. Napier will continue to
write stories involving Jack Lorentz.
