Cate Fante has just
become a judge. She’s smart and sexy and wears designer suits. She leads
a dark double life that she hides from everyone. When, after her court
ruling, the defendant kills the accused and then commits suicide, a very
nosy detective uncovers her secret. Soon, it’s splashed all across the
tabloids, her boyfriend dumps her and she’s asked to resign from her
post. Poor Cate, her troubles are only just beginning. Someone is out to
kill her, and she’s wondering if she shouldn’t go to court herself and sue
some people. She’s running for her life and fighting her way back to the
truth...if she stays alive long enough. Cate is made of stern stuff and
she won’t go down without a fight. Even though she’s down, she’s got some
good friends in her corner, one of which is a rather interesting member of
the police force.
Lisa Scottoline
plunges us into the world of the courts, lawyers, judges and poorly paid
clerks. This story opens with a very exciting court scene that escalates
to a first rate mystery. Pulling no punches, Ms. Scottoline gives us a
heroine who has a rather sordid side to her life, but who is not afraid to
stand up and admit her mistakes. She is willing to fight for what is
right in spite of the rather stuffy opinion of others. This reviewer was
riveted to her seat reading this book and finished it off in one sitting.
She never saw the ending coming and in this reviewers opinion, this is the
sign of a first rate mystery. Ms. Scottoline dangles a few red herrings
in her reader’s face, and keeps them in the dark in more ways than one.
This reviewer can recommend this mystery highly, it will leave you
breathless.
