Ellie Simpson and
her three friends, Maggie, Pam, and Toni, have tried every diet fad on the
market from Atkins, to Weight Watchers and even the Avocado and Rice
Krispies Gut-Cleansing Regime. It seems losing five pounds is more
difficult than finding a lasting love. So, they have decided to form
their own club, Women Watching Weight, and once a week they meet to talk
sex and the latest weight loss fad. During this they freely imbibe wine
and beer and engorge on the local take away knowing that the next day they
will be strict on their diet again. Then, the idea gets thrown out that
the first one to lose seven pounds will win a date set up by the other
three. Thing is, Ellie has just got a new job, she’s the nanny for a
hunky, fairly successful crime writer and she is now torn between loyalty
to her best friend and her own heart.
This is a very fun
read with lots of dazzling dialogue and a very sweet romance between Ellie
and her crime writer. The addition of a couple of children, to which she
is the nanny, lends an interesting conflict. The characters are all alive
and vibrant and Ms. Notaro brings her reader into the harsh reality of
weight watching. It’s usually a never ending battle getting those pounds
off and Ms. Notaro has attacked this theme with humor and wit. The plot
is somewhat predictable, and there isn’t too much sex. Well, there is a
lot of talk about sex and the reader is aware that sex is going on, but
that’s it. It’s the kind of story to curl up with on a rainy afternoon
and get a few good smiles from. This reviewer enjoyed this story but
didn’t feel it was so outstanding plot wise. However, this reviewer is
sure that there are many readers that will enjoy it.
