Solomon Mayfield
lives in a nursing home. He is often visited by more than his family and
the nurses. He sees ghosts. Ghosts of his past. He’s seen them almost
all his life. When he dies in his sleep, his childhood secrets all come
back to him and others that he never knew. When Sol was twelve years old,
his mother and sister disappear leaving him with his alcoholic father.
His father has a violent temper and a troubled past. Everyone thinks that
his father has something to hide and Sol’s own suspicions are confirmed
when he sees visions of his sister’s ghost. Sol walks a strange path into
the past and to the place where the dead dwell. Here he will discover the
secrets of Varner Creek.
Michael Lee Weems
has written a chilling tale of intrigue and mystery. Readers should not
be put off as this story starts rather slowly. The characters are
introduced, the back story is explained. The reader should definitely
persevere. As this story unfolds, it gets more and more exciting. There
are many twists and turns and quite a few surprises. Mr. Weem describes
the life and people of the small farming community in 1909 with clarity
and detail. The ending will certainly have the reader raising her
eyebrows. Solomon’s father is a dark, seedy sort that will have the
reader hating and pitying him at the same time. This reviewer would warn
the reader to keep some hankies nearby for the ending, she will need them.
