Solms Halle is a
nightspot in Texas that is where all the locals go to have a good time,
meet up with their friends and listen to some country music. All that
honky-tonking comes to an abrupt halt one night when someone kills the
manager of Trenton Wolfe’s band by embedding a guitar string in his throat
and stuffing him in a supply closet. Molly Mullet is a police officer
that was working security that night at the club, upon discovering that
the police are focused one of her childhood friends, Bobby Wiggins, Molly
decides that she cannot simply stand by and let them prosecute an innocent
man. Molly begins digging into the pasts of all those involved looking
for a lead on the real murderer; however, Molly becomes the target as the
cold-blooded killer seeks to stop her dead in her tracks.
BITE THE MOON
is the first in the Molly Mullet Mystery series. Ms. Fanning, normally a
true-crime writer, has ventured into fiction with this well-written
mystery. It is easy to become completely ensconced in the book as the
vivid descriptions fill all the senses with the surroundings of Molly’s
world. Molly’s emotions are palpable as she revisits tragedies in her
past in order to familiarize the reader with her life. Ms. Fanning did a
fantastic job of not bogging the reader down in too much forensic detail
or police procedure. There are brief glimpses of chances at romance for
Molly but the main overtone of the book is spellbinding suspense and
mystery.
This reviewer will
be looking forward to the next installment in this series because Molly
Mullet is such a likable and believable character and Ms. Fanning has
given her a great voice.
