Historical Inspirational Fiction

Truth Wyman doesn’t want to leave her home. Her entire family is in Nicodemus, Kansas. Her family were among the first settlers to the area. And now that Truth and her husband Moses are expecting their first child the last thing she wants to do is move to Topeka. But with Moses’ nomination to state office, it seems more than likely that is just what she will have to do.

In Nicodemus’s sister community of Hill City, Marcia Boyle has finally returned home from an extended vacation in Europe only to find her beau, Jeb, has an expressed interest in the Boyle’s housekeeper, Fern. A new man in town, Garrett Johnson catches Marcia’s eye. Now she must decide just where her true feelings lie.

DAYLIGHT COMES created many different conflicting emotions in this reader. Superbly written, the characters in this book are most assuredly human and very realistic with many flaws and an array of emotions. One cannot help but feel for Truth and yet feel she is a very selfish woman. The election of her husband, the first black man to serve on a state level could do wonders not only for all African American people, but for the little town of Nicodemus as well. Yet she wants to be close to her family as most women wish when they are expecting their first child, prompted by fear and trepidation. Moses is whom this reader felt sorry for. While not brought out much in the book this reviewer is sure he must have felt trapped between a rock and a hard spot. However, he did seem a bit disconnected with his wife’s feelings.

Fern and Marcia are other characters that came across as selfish and self-absorbed. Fern is only looking to find a man to take care of her. And any man will do. Marcia left Jeb while she went to Europe and while he stated he wouldn’t wait for her, she fully expected him to. Aw, the perils of youthful pride and ego. This reviewer didn’t envy Jeb’s position of being stuck being these two headstrong women. However, both of these two young ladies will learn quite a bit about life and about themselves before the final page of this wonderful enlightening tale is through.

DAYLIGHT COMES will give the reader many things to think about. From the parallels of the lives of seemingly different people to the change of heart that God can have in one’s life. Faith is an amazing thing when it comes when least expected. Come and partake of the faith in this engrossing tale. DAYLIGHT COMES is highly recommended. While the third book in the FREEDOM’S PATH series, it is a stand-alone story. This reviewer hasn’t read the first two books, but just might have to put them on the to be read list after reading DAYLIGHT COMES.
