Arriving at
Conquest island, a remote island just west of the Solomon Islands,
Commander Drew McLachlan sets up his group of air warriors and prepares to
combat the Japanese. It’s autumn, 1943 and during their skirmishes they
are able to inflict serious casualties upon the enemy. But all isn’t well
on the squadron’s new home. It seems that in the volcanic caves nearby,
there is evidence of a past habitation of unknown natives. They resemble
no known living race and they leave behind mutilated victims. Soon, Drew
is fighting two fronts. It seems that these creatures have been watching
over a far greater evil and when Drew is deep into the mystery of the
island the Japanese come in full force to attack their base. He realizes
that his only hope for his and his men’s survival lies deep in the dark,
deadly caves of Conquest.
Mr Rainey is a
weaver of nightmares. Yes, this reviewer was thrilled by this tale of
dark and deadly secrets, things that go bump in the night and secrets that
could mean death and destruction. Mr. Rainey leads the reader into a
world that is all too familiar. While reading, this reviewer could almost
smell the petrol, hear the whine of the airplane engines and the whiz of
the bullets. His characters find a place in the heart of the reader and
when some get hurt and wounded, the reader will sympathize along with his
friends. Suddenly, Mr. Rainey tears open the normal world and gives his
readers a glimpse into possibilities that could be just around the
corner. He gives us the things of nightmares, the dark evil thoughts of
power, but at what price? This reviewer enjoyed reading this captivating,
enthralling if not disturbing read.
