Jacquelyn Sanchez
is a single woman trying to make a life for herself in politics as she
gets over a breakup from her ex. Having taken a position as the
assistant to the Mayor’s wife, she never thought her life would be about
running errands and making sure “Mrs. Mayor” was kept together for the
public eye.
As Mrs. Mayor
learns of her husband’s affair, gets a black eye, and wants to go back
to her old life as a soap actor for a visit, Jacqs finds herself
scrambling to keep her job and life separate. She does not want to be
friends with Mrs. Mayor yet she feels responsible for her. Add in a
trip home to visit with her family, a new roommate and more, and Jacqs
has a life filled with drama.
Jacqs finds
herself in situations with her meddling family, nutty friends and the
Mayor that only a real life drama would include; fiction could not be
this hilariously bizarre, and yet come across as real. This novel was a
riot; Margo Candela is a talented author with a great sense of humor.
UNDERNEATH IT ALL left this reader shaking her head and laughing
out loud as the scenes unravel and leave Jacqs with many dramatic and
traumatic scenarios to deal with in her daily life.
Secondary
characters fill out this novel in a way that gives it depth as well as
humor. Jacqs’ family is the typical neurotic bunch that gives her grief
about her divorce, wants the best for her and drives her crazy in
between. She is a normal every day Latino woman that is just trying to
make a name for herself in this crazy world we all live in, that is the
kicker that makes this a great novel for every reader to sit back and
enjoy as they hide from the stress of the holidays.
