Guardians are protectors of Dreamers, human charges, from the Nightmares
which once invaded their own home world. The Elders sought a place for
the Guardians to escape but in doing so accidentally created a permanent
opening which allows these horrific beings to enter their plane of
existence and then into our world attacking us when we are between
wakefulness and deep sleep. Since that time, our champions have taken
it upon themselves to battle those who would so prey upon us.
Connor Bruce learned that the Elders had been keeping secrets which made
a mockery of what Guardians had been taught. He and a small band have
become rebels and worked towards getting at the truth. A raid into the
temple on a search for information reveals a horrific and insane
creature. Worse, there are likely more of them.
Needing to get the information to his friend and former superior Aidan
Cross, Connor makes a trip to the human world just as Aidan had before
him. The sad thing is, they have realized that the trip can only be
made one way. He must leave all that he knows behind.
Single mother, Stacey Daniels works at Bates’ All Creatures Animal
Hospital and is housesitting for her boss Lyssa Bates. When an absolute
hunk shows up at the door claiming to be a pal of her friend’s fiancé
Aidan, she is at a loss as he steamrolls past her and makes himself at
home. She does get confirmation that he should stay but the guy is
trouble. Problem is she can’t help being darned attracted to the wrong
kind of guy.
This
is the second instalment into the very erotically charged Dream Guardian
series. Connor and Stacey’s attraction is absolutely combustible.
It
would be difficult to be indifferent to Connor. He is a hero who is
protective and loving in the way that the heroine truly needs. Must say
that it doesn’t hurt that the man is very appreciative of Stacey
regardless of her view of her physical attractions. He is a hands on
kind of a guy in making his point and we are also delighted to see he
has a big heart to match his other attributes.
Readers will enjoy Stacey’s snappy comments and we are aware that the
hard stances that she takes hide a soft and very vulnerable core.
Bringing up a child on one’s own is a challenge that all of us can
respect. We are drawn to her willingness to do the difficult things for
what is right and for love. It would have been nice to have seen more
of the relationship between Stacey and her son and would have made the
novel that much richer.
In
the meantime, the author keeps us guessing regarding the mysteries to do
with the Elders and particularly Sheron who had once been an instructor
to Aidan and Connor. Eerie disquiet occasionally comes forth to prick
our senses.
Readers may however find a bit of difficulty in the landslide of
information about Guardians, Nightmares and Elders towards the beginning
of the book. It is much to absorb and feels confusing. This eases
somewhat as one continues reading but is a bit of an initial shock.
Once
we get into the meat of the romance, it is easy to be engrossed with the
relationship of the main characters and of Lyssa and Aidan who have
substantial parts in this story. Our questions regarding the Elders and
their subterfuges continue to grow and certainly make us curious about
what the next book will bring.
