Historical Romance

Alaina MacGaren is forced from her home.  Her father and brothers have died in the war, her mother passed away, and due to circumstances beyond her control she has been labeled a traitor and has a bounty on her head. Now she must dress as a filthy urchin to pass unmolested through the enemy to find refuge with her only remaining relations; her aunt, uncle and spoiled cousin Roberta.

Doctor for the Union, Cole Latimer finds himself helping the young “lad” Al. Al’s deception doesn’t fool Cole for long, but long enough for Cole to find himself married to the wrong woman, Roberta!

Will Cole and Alaina be able to put aside all of the obstacles in their way and find their way back to each other? You will have to buy and read ASHES IN THE WIND and find out!

ASHES IN THE WIND is a story packed full of intrigue and action. Will Alaina’s masquerades be discovered? She has more than one! What will Cole do when he learns the truth? These are questions that will be answered within the pages of this gripping classic novel by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss.

Alaina is such an endearing character. She has faced many trials and hardships in her young life. All she wants is for some peace and to be left alone. But men will be men! Soon she finds that no matter where she turns and no matter how she is dressed there is always a Yankee underfoot. They either want to throttle her, or make love to her. Just wait until they find out that all of these young imps that have come into their lives is in actuality one person; Alaina MacGaren! Oh-La-La! This reader just shivers in remembrance!  Ms. Woodiwiss is so accomplished at creating such delightful twists and turns.

This reader couldn’t help but feel sorry for Cole. Married to a shrew and wanting another. There are many instances in ASHES IN THE WIND that had this reader giggling. Many of which were the times that Al got the better of an unsuspecting Cole.

And a review of ASHES IN THE WIND wouldn’t be complete without mention of the character, Al. Although “he” is in truth Alaina, Al also has a personality all his own. This little scamp will worm his way right into every reader’s heart. Al is truly a beloved character to this reviewer.

Kudos to Avon Books for re-releasing beloved Kathleen E. Woodiwiss books. This reader has been a fan for 25 years. Thanks to Avon, new generations are able to enjoy the classic stories that many a romance reader has sank their teeth into.
