Contemporary Romance

Mary Ann is happy to have a job as a secretary at a law office where she can support her son and hide from her ex-husband. She has secrets she does not want anyone to know, especially her new co-worker, Jake Turner. Jake is a divorce attorney with a reputation of always winning, and a reputation of being a bit of a ladies man. Soon the sparks fly between them, but can Mary Ann trust him?

This reviewer had a hard time deciding the rating for this book. The storyline is very interesting and holds great promise. But the book just did not fulfil that promise for this reviewer. Mary Ann is a single mother trying to keep one step ahead of her drunken ex-husband, who is the favoured one by her very own mother. Yet Mary Ann calls her mother and not only tells the mother her phone number and address, but where she is working and her son’s day-care. Mary Ann had to know that her mother would not waste any time in telling her rat of an ex where she was.

Jake is a character that this reviewer felt was believable. He sees his share of broken relationships and can use his experiences to spot a woman with the qualities he is looking for to create a stable and lasting relationship with. However to this reviewer it seems that Jake and Mary Ann went from keeping each other at bay to being madly in love on the very next page.

Added to this, the prose throughout the book did not flow smoothly and lacked in believability. This reviewer felt these points drug the book down and therefore are the reasons for the low rating that this reader gives to DON’T RUSH ME. However there are some redeeming qualities in this book that make it a worthwhile read. Mary Ann, while naïve, is a mother who loves her son and has been damaged by an abusive past relationship. She is a character that the reader can sympathize with and care about. Jake is a caring father and a kind person who goes out of his way to help those who he feels deserve it, even those who are not his clients. What a wonderful quality that is not present in many lawyers.

While DON’T RUSH ME is not a book that will find it’s way on this reviewer’s keeper shelf, many readers will find it a worthwhile read.
