Imogene (Genie)
Macklin’s late husband was a cad as well as a philanderer. His death has
left her high and dry. She has no funds to support herself or her unborn
child. Genie cares for the wounded soldiers where she meets Sir Coryn of
Ardsley. Coryn proposes marriage to Genie. She accepts as he will
provide for her and her child. Coryn is not what he seems. He is
destined to be a permanent member of the Grim Reaper’s minion but he has
made a deal with the Devil. Coryn is given six months to find the symbol
of his missing humanity, an hourglass pin or be part of the minion
forever.
Genie is a strong
woman. She has been through hell but keeps going. She does command
admiration from the reader. Although Coryn wants to help Genie, his
motives are not as pure as the marriage will help him in his search for
the hourglass pin. Eventually he does win the reader over as his
treatment of Genie is impeccable. He is capable of caring and loving
anther human being. The author does a masterful job of developing these
two characters. Their march to the “happily ever after” is slow but ever
so satisfying as the story unfolds.
THE HOURGLASS
is a blend of the paranormal and historical romance. Ms.
Metzger does a great job of weaving these elements together. Coryn and
Genie feels like characters from the period. They are a very likable
couple as they slowly fall in love. Readers will be pulled into the story
and the paranormal aspects are just an added bonus. At its essence, it
is a story about second chances in life and love.
