This is the story
of Queen Elizabeth 1st as she may have been as a young girl
growing up in rather turbulent times. Young Elizabeth must face many
struggles in and out of the royal court. Her father had her mother
beheaded when she was very young and has since lived away from court.
As King Henry VIII grows old, he reunites his children. Elizabeth
learns to trust her instincts and finds power in her inheritance. She
is surrounded by loyal servants and knights who are ready to defend her
with their lives. Beheading is not uncommon among the factions that war
for the crown and Elizabeth must navigate a sea of shifting loyalties
and dangerous affections. One thing she learns with a passion, if she
ever becomes Queen, she will not share the throne with anyone.
This reviewer is
a big fan of the Tudor era, especially about the life of Queen Elizabeth
1st of England. This was a fascinating woman, a strong woman
who ruled England and brought it riches and peace. In this story, Ann
Rinaldi brings to life Elizabeth’s childhood up until she becomes
Queen. Although a work of fiction, Ms. Rinaldi lets her readers relive
the life of this interesting woman and describes how it must have been
like for young Bess. Historically, this story is rich in description
and quite accurate in its historical facts. Ms. Rinaldi has certainly
done her homework well. Although this book is aimed at young adults,
this reviewer enjoyed this story very much and when her children need to
cover this subject in school, this book will be recommended to them.
