Harper Connelly
finds dead people. It’s a gift, and a curse, a legacy of a lightning
strike that nearly killed her several years earlier. Traveling with her
step brother, Tolliver, she makes a living helping to solve cases that
leave the authorities stumped.
When Harper comes
near a dead body, it speaks to her. Not in words, but in knowledge.
Who they are, and how they died. And she shares that information with
the authorities.
When she and
Tolliver come to the call of a worried grandmother in a small town that
has had a rash of recent disappearances, she thinks it may be something
far more dire than simply a spate of kids running away from home.
As it turns out,
she’s right. But that’s just the beginning.
This reviewer is a
long-time fan of Charlene Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels. This other
series is a lot grittier, the protagonist not nearly as free-spirited as
Sookie seems to be. Harper is a haunted soul, and her relationship with
her step-brother Tolliver is both complex and captivating.
This is the third
novel in the series, but stands alone quite well. It wasn’t hard for
this reviewer to catch on. It’s a strongly written novel with strongly
defined characters and a true pleasure to read with its combination of
paranormal and suspenseful romance.
This reviewer
strongly urges anyone who loves the Sookie Stackhouse novels as he does
to consider picking up something from this series as well. There really
is no comparison, but that fact is impressive in itself.
